Walking a Cat
|
While thinking about getting another pet, hopefully to be friends and get Ten moving around a bit, as well as getting me moving around a bit... I did a lot of contemplation on whether it is easier to train a cat to be a dog.... or a dog to be a cat.
At one point, I was leaning towards the "dog to be a cat". It appears with some special stuff and a lot of training, you can teach a small dog to go in a litter box and be a fully indoor dog. I was dubious about whether Ten would ever accept any kind of dog though, and I am really just not an "indoor dog" kinda person. However, it wasn't until Chris reminded me that a dog would eat cat poop that I was just like "No... oh no... no-no-no-no-no."
So, I went back to the original idea of training a "cat to be a dog"... at least when it comes to taking walks. It will be much harder than training a dog to walk, since it goes against every cat nature to trot along ignoring the world around it. But... I think it can be done... and Mowzer and I are off to a good start. I made my own tiny kitten-size version of a "medium" size harness that I bought so that we can start training right away, and already I have had to expand the chest piece tiny amounts twice. He will probably be in the medium size harness within a few weeks. (Hope he likes it as well as my version.)
Since he is still staying temporarily in the hallway and utility room area (a state extended due to his upcoming shots and snip-snip recovery time), the kitchen and dining area are neat places to explore. And with near freezing temperatures during the day still, outside is too cold.
He still gets distracted in newer areas, but he is starting to even trot in the "boring" areas so he can get to the fun parts faster.
